Why is there a pump on my hot water cylinder?
On my office heating system we have a indirect hot water cylinder. On the cylinder it has a Pipe coming into it feeding in cold water. It also has a pump that seems to pump water from the top of the cylinder into the cold Water Inlet pipe.
What is the function of this pump? Is it just to move hot water to the Bottom of the cylinder?
A zone pump? Why does it go back into the cold water feed then?
It is a Circulating pump for the Central heating. An Indirect Cylinder has a copper coil inside the Cylinder which heats the hot water and central heating. No way can these waters intemix. The central heating water runs inside the coil in the tank to heat the water and the central heating. Your system also has 2 Motorised Valves so this enables you to chose heating and hot water, or just hot water, or just heating only.There is no way that water can be pumped back into the cold water refill pipe.
