Copyright (c) 2008 Katie Kelley
A recent study conducted by the state of Washington found that the number of truck accidents involving log trucks has declined by 11 percent even as the number of accidents involving all commercial trucks increased by 15 percent over a Two-year period.
The most deadly and costly vehicular accidents involve commercial truck accidents. When a truck accident occurs it can devastate more than just the individuals involved, but can often affect family and friends as Well.
What are Commercial Trucks, Log Trucks?
In the United States, commercial trucks, also commonly referred to as heavy trucks, are those vehicles Used to transport cargo and weighing more than 26,001 pounds in which case a commercial truck driver’s license is also needed.
There are an array of types of commercial trucks that carry a variety of goods from logs and food to military vehicles to commercial trucks that are specifically designed to mix and transport concrete.
Researchers have reported that while the construction of commercial trucks continues to improve, the level of quality still remains well below the quality level of automobiles and it has been said that commercial trucks remain well below automobiles in quality due mainly to the fact that nearly 3/4 of all commercial trucks are custom built, causing inefficiencies in steamlining a commercial truck Assembly line. However, a lengthy list of popular commercial truck manufacturers remains both worldwide and in America. Top truck manufacturers are as follows:
* American LaFrance
* Autocar Company USA
* Crane Carrier Corporation
* Chevrolet
* Colet
* Dodge
* E-One
* Freightliner
* Ford
* GMC
* Hino
* Isuzu
* Kenworth

* Nissan
* Oshkosh

Logging trucks and log truck drivers are no different from commercial trucks or commercial truck drivers, however, the Washington study conducted by the Washington State University found that a small group of log truck drivers are often considered seasoned and experienced drivers of the dangerous profession, which may be attributing to the total decrease of log truck accidents. However, the study also noted that as these individuals begin to retire, not only will the logging industry suffer, but accidents may begin to increase instead of decrease.
The study noted that, “rising costs, aging drivers and Long hours of service” as well as “other factors that could affect safety and economic viability include the ongoing effects of deregulation, poor driver recruitment” could all become factors responsible for a potential increase of log truck accidents.

How many people who own a truck actually need a truck?
9 out 10 ten trucks i see on the road are not towing or hauling anything in the back. I have talked to multiple people who own trucks and they all say that they drive their truck every where. So i would like to know how many people own trucks, and how many days a week do you actually haul things. Also what exactly is a luxury truck?
And now let’s look at it from the other side. How many people who own just a car, actually need a truck?
Me me me me!
I am constantly needing to pick up large items from freecycle or for the garden (rocks, compost, manure, small trees), and haul other things that my trunk is frustratingly too small for. I frequently am not able to get what I need because I don’t have the means to transport it. Would owning a truck mean I transport things every moment I drive? Well that idea is as ridiculous as paying to maintain and insure both a truck and a car for myself for the sole purpose of saving a small amount on gas.
Perhaps your real question is: aren’t people hurting the environment when they have vehicles larger than they need? And to that I answer humans shouldn’t be using fossil fuels in the first place, as it’s polluting. It is not wrong or bad for individuals to use the only reasonable option available (i.e. gas in their vehicle). We are going to hit peak Oil someday; it doesn’t matter whether it’s in the next few years or in 25 years. Either way, we’ll be forced to Switch to green fuels when this other option runs out. The green options have already been discovered, but those who Stand to make the greatest profits on oil prevent green fuels from becoming a viable option. They will milk it to the very End. So I ask YOU: is the regular, everyday consumer the problem here? Or is it the powers that be that should be blamed. Or perhaps, should we just live our lives, focusing on things that actually do make a difference instead, until the time comes that the World is forced to use hydrogen-Powered cars?
